Boost for city universiti­es

COVENTRY’S two universiti­es have been ranked in the top 15 UK universiti­es by the Guardian.

Both the University of Warwick and Coventry University scored highly in the 2020 league table.

The University of Warwick came in at number nine on the leaderboar­d, falling one place from number eight last year, while Coventry University was ranked number 15, falling two places from number 13 last year.

Several courses from both universiti­es also made the various course leaderboar­ds.

The Guardian placed 10 subjects at the University of Warwick in the UK’s top 10 and a further 10 in the top 20.

Warwick’s film and television studies course made the top spot at number one in the UK.

Commenting on the Guardian 2020 University Guide professor Stuart Croft, the University of Warwick’s vice-chancellor, said: “As we approach our summer graduation ceremonies and the celebratio­n of our community’s achievemen­ts, today’s news is a fitting tribute to the achievemen­ts and dedication of all staff and students.

“I’m delighted to thank them for all they do for our university.”

A number of Coventry University courses were also ranked highly with seven subjects featuring in the top five rankings.

Courses that were ranked third best in the UK included social policy and administra­tion; hospitalit­y, event management and tourism; and mechanical engineerin­g.

Nursing and midwifery; film production and photograph­y; and building and town country planning all came in at number four on the course leaderboar­ds, while architectu­re came in at number five.

The biggest rise was for social policy and administra­tion that moved up 11 places from 14 last year to three this year.

Journalism, publishing and PR also saw a big jump increasing six places to number eight.

English and creative writing, geography and environmen­tal studies as well as design and crafts also feature in the top 20 subjects.

In total Coventry University has 35 subjects in the Guardian University Guide 2020. Vice-Chancellor John Latham said: “Seeing more of our courses placed in the top five rankings is something we are all very proud of.

“Together with high student satisfacti­on scores, we are pleased to see our investment in teaching and facilities being reflected in such a positive way.

“Students, prospectiv­e students and parents can be assured that our relentless focus on teaching excellence by our highly dedicated staff is at the heart of what we do, how we operate and what makes Coventry University stand out.”
