MAKE AN EGG BOX TREASURE CHEST FILLED WITH GOLD DOUBLOONS

-

EVERY pirate needs a treasure chest in which to keep their prized possessions.

If you’d like to add to your hoard, why not make some golden doubloons?

Gold doubloons, or escudo, originated in Spain in the 18th century.

The coins weren’t perfect circles as they were minted (made) by hand, so don’t worry if your cutting is a bit wobbly!

There are lots of pirate-style designs to choose from so you can fill your pockets with golden treasure.

YOU WILL NEED:

An egg box Corrugated cardboard Paints

A drawing pencil Buttons

PVA glue

Shells, jewellery etc for ‘treasure’

METHOD

1. Think about how you would like your treasure chest to look and use a pencil to mark out the details on your egg box.

2. Cut some shapes from card to make details such as fastenings and a lock. Glue them in place.

3. Paint your egg box all over, then paint in the details. When completely dry, add some metallic buttons if you wish.

4. To fill your chest with pieces of eight, first make some discs of cardboard measuring about 4cm in diameter. Use something circular as a template if you want them to be round but don’t worry if they are not – as I mentioned before, hand-minted coins weren’t perfect circles.

5. Draw pirate-style pictures and patterns on your discs in pencil. To make your designs 3D, trail PVA glue along your pencil lines (see step 1) and allow to dry completely before painting all over with gold paint.

6. Fill your treasure chest with your doubloons, shells, beads and any other sparkly trinkets you may have.

And that’s all there is to it, shipmates!
