Divisive politics has damaged country

-

I HAVE always had a great deal of respect for our City councillors regardless of political differences so your recent report that a second Conservative councillor Tim Mayer was standing down next May caught my eye when it stated that Cllr Mayer hoped to be selected to fight the Coventry South seat which becomes vacant when MP Jim Cunningham stands down at the next election.

I admire people with ambition but Cllr Mayer certainly didn’t do himself any favours with an article in the letters page of the same edition headed Betrayal of the “Leave”vote by Remain MPs which seemed to believe that the whole Brexit debacle was the fault of everyone else, and nothing to do with the Conservative Party.

The divisive politics of recent years have damaged our country, possibly for decades to come, and this will not change until people have confidence that their votes and opinions count.

The Brexit vote in Coventry was, leave 85,097, remain 67,967 and only one constituency voted to remain which was Coventry South— could be a bit of a tough call for a Brexit supporter, but we will see.

More needed to help commercial moves

The BBC reports that Coventry will receive £2m to restore buildings which survived World War Two bombing. The Telegraph reports that it will be used to improve shop frontages on the Burges as this is one of the few surviving streets from before the war. The government has said the move will breath new life into High Streets and support wider regeneration. I recently wrote about commercial offices in the city centre and asked for money from the government but I do not think this goes far enough to attract commercial office developers to the city.
