POLICE have launched for a manhunt for a speeding driver who left a trail of destruction after colliding with several parked cars in Wyken on Friday night.

The incident happened at around 8.30pm in Torcross Avenue and the driver made off from the scene after smashing into several cars on the suburban street.

Some eyewitness reports estimated as many as 15 cars had been damaged, many of them severely.

A number had to be removed by recovery vehicles under the supervision of the police.

Police have said the car involved was suspected of having cloned plates and believe the driver would have been injured, a fact borne out by some eyewitnesses.

Officers were today conducting a forensic examination of the car in a bid to trace the driver.

Some eyewitness reports also suggested two cars had been racing each other.

One person who lives locally, who did not wish to be named, told the Telegraph: “All I know is that it was two cars racing and one lost it.

“They damaged between 10 and 15 cars.”

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “Police received a 999 from a member of the public just after 8.30pm last night (October 11) reporting a speeding driver had collided with several parked cars.

“The driver of the offending vehicle - suspected of being on cloned plates - made off from the scene.

“It’s understood the man would have suffered injuries.

“The car he was driving has been seized by police and efforts to trace the man are under way.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or believes they know who could be responsible, is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101 or Live Chat via WMP Online quoting log 2515 from October 11.
