Preparing for a holiday when you have a medical condition: 4 top tips

Summer is over and many of us are thinking about our next getaway in the sun.

-

But if you’re one of the 15 million people in the UK with a long term medical condition, there’s understandably a few more planning steps to make sure everything goes smoothly!

So to help you tick every box for getting ready…

1. Choose specialist medical travel insurance:

Basic travel insurance – like those provided with some bank accounts – often don’t provide any cover for your medical conditions or far too little.

2. Check your Medication:

Making sure you have enough medication for your holiday is vital! Consider seeing your GP before you go - let them know how long you’ll be away for, and make sure your prescription covers your whole trip.

Once your prescription is sorted, if possible, travel with your medication in your cabin bag in case your hold luggage gets lost or damaged. It’s especially important with certain medicines - if your insulin goes into the hold it could freeze!

3.

Learn the local lingo: Your medical travel insurance should cover you for any loss or theft of medication… but it’s also a good idea to know the name of your medication and your condition in the local language, just in case you need it.

4. Notify your airline and cabin crew:

If you’re flying, you might need to let your airline know about your medical condition before you travel. From priority boarding to needing oxygen in the cabin, it’s always best to check your options.
