Matty facing anxious wait

COVENTRY City boss Mark Robins has confirmed that the club are still waiting for news on the severity of striker Matty Godden’s groin injury .

The 28-year-old picked up the injury on the training ground in the build-up to Saturday’s trip to face MK Dons in SkyBet League One.

He did not travel with the squad to Stadium:MK and nor was he involved in Wednesday night’s win over Fleetwood Town with Robins revealing to the media that the striker may well be facing surgery with the club still desperate for goals.

In recent games Coventry have struggled to find the net, scoring just three goals in their last five league outings.

Sky Blues fans will be longing for the return of the ex-Stevenage man who was signed to provide the goals to propel City towards a Championship promotion charge.

But Robins and Godden must first meet a specialist to discover if surgery will be needed before devising a recovery plan for his number nine.

Robins said: “He’s struggling and I’m still waiting to hear from the specialist as to what the treatment is for him, whether we need to be doing more or less.

“But he’s clearly not right because he’s in pain.”

Coventry could also be without striker Jordy Hiwula for tomorrow’s trip to face table-toppers Peterborough United, Robins has revealed.

The former Manchester City youngster was forced off at half-time against Fleetwood as an injury on his ankle, sustained in training, proved worse than at first feared. Youngster Will Bapaga has made three appearances this season and could find himself involved once again. Despite not being named in the 18-man squad, the 16-year-old travelled as a backup option to Stadium:MK last weekend and looks likely to make the bench again should Hiwula fail to prove his fitness.

“[Hiwula] said that he opened his ankle up in training on Tuesday but didn’t say anything, so today he came out and struggled to move and had to go off,” revealed Robins.

“When that happens you have to try to come up with something different and we managed to do that, and the players did really well in the second half.”

Left-back Brandon Mason has fallen behind Sam McCallum in the fight for a start at left-back.

He was out through illness, but should now make a return to the matchday squad tomorrow. However, his younger team-mate is set to hold his starting place.

“Brandon was due to play 45 minutes in the Under-23s on Monday but couldn’t make it,” said Robins. “He’ll be available at the weekend.”
