NEW PLAN FOR CITY CENTRE BLOCK OF FLATS
PLANS have been put forward for a new six-storey block of flats in Coventry city centre.
The application on 19, 19a and 21 Friars Road seeks to demolish the existing building to facilitate a 31-bed block.
The scheme consists of 17 one-bedroom flats, four two-bed flats, two three-bed flats, and eight studios.
As well as “generous balconies for each apartment”, there is also an internal courtyard in the middle of the building.
Friars Road is predominately filled with two-storey houses but also includes a seven-storey block to the right of the proposed development.
The site is currently occupied by 12 units and has been used as a veterinary surgery, but the applicant says it is in “a general state of disrepair”.
Dean Louw, on behalf of the applicant, said in the application: “The scheme has been designed to deliver high-quality modern architecture to add to the sustainable growth within Coventry city centre.
“The principle of a residential use at this location is firmly supported by the Coventry City Centre Action Plan and been confirmed in the pre-application letter.
“Friars Road is an area of substantial growth that is planned and this development will make a positive contribution to achieving the strategic aim.”
The site is a seven minute walk to the train station and a couple of minutes walk to the bus stop.
Only one disabled car parking space is provided and 48 cycle spaces, although the applicant states there are a number of car parks within a couple minutes of walking.
