Delays and cancellations in second day of rail misery

- By LAURA HARTLEY

TRAIN travellers across Coventry endured a second day of misery yesterday - with delays and cancellations causing chaos.

For the second day in a row, there are severe problems once again due to a number of issues.

There has been a power cut at Northampton station in the afternoon which caused issues for Coventry and the surrounding stations.

Many trains were either being cancelled or delayed.

West Midlands Railway said disruption was due to last until the end of the day.

However, in addition to the power cut, there was also a broken down train between Rugby and Wolverton which caused more delays in the area.

And because things come in three’s, there was yet again more disruption at Birmingham New Street - which was affecting Coventry commuters - because of a shortage of train crew with London Northwestern.

Some trains were cancelled before they could even leave London Euston, while another was held at Rugby for an hour, before reaching Coventry, and subsequently being cancelled too.

Ticket acceptance was in place with alternative train providers, along with local bus routes.

Road transport was ordered to run between Rugby and Milton Keynes and Coventry and Northampton.

People hade been left stranded at Coventry and expressed their frustration on Twitter.

@whitechapelmack said: “@VirginTrains so, just been told at Coventry I’m stuck in Coventry and can’t go to London. How do I get home??!”

Also yesterday, a broken down train near to Coseley in the Midlands during morning rush hour caused significant disruption.

Trains were being delayed or cancelled on the West Coast Main Line.
