You can’t go wrong with a classic game... JUSTIN CONNOLLY downloads five of his all-time favourites
THE old ones are the best, so they say – and when it comes to mobile gaming they are pretty much right.
Here are five of the best classic games from the app stores of Apple and Google – all are available on iOS and Android and all are free with in-app purchases.
They might be a bit long in the tooth, but they still offer some of the finest arcade action on the small screen.
So settle back for some retro fun…

Launch yourself between chaos and control as you hit the pedal and roll into underground street racing. Take down the competition, up your rep, then kick into more races, more customisations, and more cars.
We say: The first mobile game from the makers of Need For Speed was an instant classic, and with good reason.
Your goal is to claim the crown as king of the underground race scene in your custom car. Tracks are varied and races are hairy!
PLANTS VS ZOMBIES
They say: Get ready to soil your plants as a mob of fun-loving zombies is about to invade your home.
Use your arsenal of 49 zombiezapping plants – peashooters, wall-nuts, cherry bombs and more – to mulchify 26 types of zombies before they break down your door. We say: The zombies are coming in relentlessly, raid after raid.
Your only defence? Anti-zombie plants that you must place in just the right spot to keep the undead at bay. Sounds bonkers? It is, gloriously.
SONIC DASH
They say: Swipe your way over and under challenging obstacles in this fast and frenzied game.
The world famous Sonic the Hedgehog stars in his first endless running game – how far can you go?
We say: Another endless runner with a vintage pedigree that can’t be matched.
Sega’s classic character Sonic the Hedgehog comes to the small screen to dash, jump and spin though amazing 3D environments.
About as much retro fun on mobile as you can get.
