Anger at parking chaos

- By LAURA HARTLEY News Reporter laura.hartley@reachplc.com

THIS is the shocking parking near a primary school which residents say will see someone “seriously hurt”.

Pictures show cars clogging the road and pavements. There are two primary schools within walking distance of Merttens Drive in Rugby - St Marie’s Primary at the end of the road and Oakfield Primary on the next road.

One resident said he had been fighting poor parking on the road for a decade.

Steven Morson, who lives nearby, said: “The situation with regard to the possible danger to young children is certainly alarming.

“Something has to be done before someone gets seriously hurt. One of these days a child will go out in the road and because the way cars are parked, they won’t see the child or they won’t see the cars coming round the corner behind another.”

Mr Morson is calling for a “lasting solution”. As well as asking for the current traffic measures near the schools, such as double yellow lines, to be enforced, he wants to see extra parking space created for parents.

“I have been trying to sort this out for the last 10 years,” he added.

“I am aware that school parking is a problem for a lot of schools around Warwickshire, but the situation on Merttens Drive is very bad.

“Warwickshire County Councillor Maggie O’Rourke has worked very hard on my behalf to raise this problem with the appropriate WCC

Departments and the (Police) Rugby Town West Safer Neighbourhood Team. But there needs to be a lasting solution that includes better and safer parking and I have proposed that using the eastern part of the Merttens Field is a perfect place to provide this safer parking. The situation also needs rigorous enforcement of the current yellow lines and yellow zig zag area including the issuing of parking notices.”
