RICHARD HAMMOND is incredibly excited at all times. So much so, that it becomes a bit infectious. The Grand Tour presenter is thrilled about this epic engineering series, declaring: “I’m on a mission to get hands-on with size and explore the world’s biggest structures and machines.”
From the longest underground railway tunnel, to a cargo ship the size of four football pitches, he is going behind-the-scenes of the largest structures and machines in the world to understand the science of ‘big’.
How do engineers build and maintain these super structures?
Of course, he has plenty of experience in taking ridiculous risks, however dangerous, so he’s quite happy to get hands-on – driving, climbing, crawling... what ever it takes to get inside these big places.
He also meets the unsung heroes at the front line making them work, people who we never usually see because they basically live in a factory with robots for friends.
In tonight’s episode, Richard visits the biggest car factory in the world in Germany. It’s three times bigger than Monaco and produces 800,000 cars a year – that’s one every 16 seconds.
“How is that even possible?” shouts Richard.
Even if you aren’t interested in car factories, this is a fascinating place. It has its own hotels, football team, orchestra and 6,000 bikes to transport people around. Tourists even turn up for a nose during their holidays.
If you like a lot of stats, and don’t mind a fair bit of yelling, explosions and general engineering excitement, this will be a big hit.
