CARS DAMAGED BY HUGE POTHOLE

EMERGENCY REPAIRS CARRIED OUT TO ROAD AFTER 11 VEHICLES AFFECTED IN COMMUTE CHAOS

- > BOBBY BRIDGE & RACHEL STRETTON REPORT:

DRIVERS have described how their cars were damaged by a massive pothole on their commute to work.

As many as 11 cars were affected after hitting the huge pothole on Tamworth Road in Corley yesterday morning.

It has now been made safe by the highways team and a spokesman said that an engineer was due to return to make the repair more permanent.

Police were on scene directing traffic and stopping other drivers from hitting the pothole, as those who had been affected pulled over to the side of the road to wait for their cars to be towed away or repaired.

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police advised drivers to take alternative routes into Coventry yesterday where possible.

Elizabeth Randle said she was driving her Mercedes CLA to Newbury when she heard a “massive bang”. She pulled onto the side of the road, along with other drivers, and had to wait more than two hours for roadside assistance.

She said: “There were four or five cars who hit the same pothole from what I could see and were pulling over by the side of the road. I just heard a bang and soon realised I couldn’t drive on.”

Martin James, from Atherstone, was commuting to work in Coventry and also pulled over to the side of the road when he realised his car was damaged.

He said: “I heard a big bang, I carried on for quarter of a mile or so but then I had to stop. It was then I realised that both of my passenger side tyres were flat.”

The incident was first reported to police at 7.10am and it is understood that highways were in attendance from 7.40am.

A Warwickshire Police spokesman said up to 11 cars were affected. A Warwickshire County Council spokesperson said: “We have been made aware that several vehicles have hit a pothole on Tamworth Road in Corley this morning. Our term maintenance contractor is currently on site making the pothole safe and the highway authority engineer responsible for the road will be attending the site to arrange a more permanent repair.”
