TV star Dom Joly kicks off UK tour in Cov

- By OSCAR HORNSTEIN

TV star Dom Joly is kicking off his huge UK tour in Coventry in February.

The comedian and writer first made a name for himself with his hit reality series Trigger Happy TV, and since then he has travelled all across the world, visiting some of the strangest and darkest places on the planet.

After years of globetrotting adventures, he’s touring the nation to share some of the funniest and most dangerous stories and snaps from the bizarre destinations he has been to, which include Chernobyl, Iran and even North Korea.

He was also a hit in the Australian jungle when he appeared on ITV’s I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!

Joly is visiting over 50 venues across the country, but his grand tour starts right here in Coventry, at the Albany Theatre. The show, called Dom Joly’s Holiday Snaps - Travel and Comedy in The Danger Zone and will consist of the comedian presenting his collection of holiday snaps from the travels he has done throughout his career.

“I’ve got this collection of weird holiday snaps,” he said, “And I know there’s that cliche that nobody wants to see anybody else’s holiday snaps.

“Well my holiday snaps are really good. And I’ve got some really good stories with them.

“The theme is travel. The three things I’ll be showing will be my own holiday snaps, holiday snaps from TV shows and holiday snaps from my books.

“So, for instance, when we did Trigger Happy TV, we went to Switzerland and found out our runner couldn’t ski and then I got arrested for impersonating a yeti.

“Then there was stuff from World Shut Your Mouth, which had me frightening the Eskimo with cymbals. There’s another snap of me at Chernobyl, thinking ‘Should I eat the vegetables here or not?’ So, when I put all of them together, I’ve got a seriously great holiday show.”

A lover of unorthodox travelling, some of the other places Joly has travelled to include the Congo, Syria and his birth country of Lebanon.

In a recent interview, the World Shut Your Mouth star spoke about one of the strangest places he has visited, North Korea.

“North Korea is still the weirdest place I’ve ever been to. It’s insane. The only people who go to North Korea are hardened travellers whose idea of hell is a coach tour - but they all sign up to a coach tour.

“And they take you around the Museum of Agricultural Scythes and Lathes and it’s dreadful but because it’s North Korea, everyone thinks it’s great.

“They have a massive bunker to stash the presents given to North Korea by other world leaders. So they have a train from Stalin, a stuffed alligator holding drinks from the PLO, a little plate from the NUM in Derby. It’s insane.”

He will also be giving his fans the opportunity to meet him after the show, and have copies of his latest book, The Hezbollah Hiking Club, signed.

The tour will begin at the Coventry Albany Theatre on February 13, and will continue across the country until April 12.
