Dome back as host for major clash

-

BIG-TIME boxing comes back to Coventry at the Sky Dome for the first time in a decade with an exciting clash between bitter rivals Shakan Pitters and Craig Richards for the vacant British Light-Heavyweight Championship.

The Sky Dome was a boxing hotbed in the early to mid 2000s with a host of popular local boxers, including Neil Simpson, Dean Pithie, Richard Evatt, Steven Bendall and Andy Halder all featuring in glorious fight nights at the venue.

With the last championship boxing event staged there almost ten years ago and with Coventry leading up to its year as 2021 City of Culture, promoter Mick Hennessy felt it was the ideal time and location to bring boxing back.

A top quality undercard features some great Midlands match ups that includes a feisty Coventry derby between welterweights Jordan Cooke and Michael Green over six-rounds and Coventry’s Dilly Singh against Birmingham’s Matt Sen at cruiserweight over six rounds.

An on-sale date and full ticket details will be announced shortly.

■ Kubrat Pulev is “almost certain” to be Anthony Joshua’s next opponent according to promoter Eddie Hearn.

The Bulgarian is Joshua’s IBF mandatory challenger and Hearn is confident a fight will be agreed.

“I am almost certain that will be AJ’s next fight,” Hearn said.

“Spurs, Emirates, Cardiff, Twickenham – they are all in play. But most likely it will be early May, late June, Joshua Pulev in the UK.”

Joshua regained his unified belts when he won his December rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia.
