Main city route one of the worst collision hotspots in the Midlands

- By CLAIRE HARRISON News Reporter

A STRETCH of main road in Coventry has been named as one of the worst in the whole of the West Midlands for serious and fatal collisions.

Between 2016 and 2019, the the B4119/B4113 Foleshill/ Longford Road has had two fatal collisions and 24 serious collisions.

With this in mind, West Midlands Police staged a crackdown on collision hotspots.

The force’s road harm prevention team ran a two-week sting to target these routes and more than 700 drivers were caught speeding.

They were hit with on-the-spot fines or face court action which could lead to penalty points and losing their licence.

Among those caught included two drivers travelling at 60mph in a 30mph zone, with pedestrian crossings, in Birmingham.

Sergeant Jon Butler, from the road harm prevention team, said: “Speed limits are not targets to beat they are there to keep all road users safe.

“Speeding is one of the biggest killers on our roads and such reckless behaviour only puts lives at risk.

“The operation was not only aimed at stopping dangerous driving but getting motorists to think about their inexcusable actions.

“We are determined to reduce collisions on all routes across the region and won’t relent in our drive to keep all drivers and pedestrians safe.”

The speeding sting also included’ Op Zig Zag,’ where drivers who are spotted speeding near pedestrian crossings are stopped and summonsed to court for the more serious offence of driving without due care and attention.

Police chiefs have stressed that officers will continue to carry out regular speed checks - including routes which are not just statistically collision hotspots - to keep road users safe.
