James is just the job for Cov

- By MATT GRETTON

ANTHONY Allen knows Coventry Rugby “must be on their game” when they travel to Goldington Road and face Bedford Blues under the Friday night lights this evening.

The Blue and Whites created more late drama at Butts Park Arena last weekend to hand Cornish Pirates just their third defeat in 11 matches during this season’s Greene King IPA Championship.

As Coventry cross over the halfway point sitting fourth in the Championship, the defence coach wants his team to pick up from where they left off last weekend, using the momentum they gained as Rowland Winter’s men work themselves up the league.

“We’ve just got to focus on our game and implement what we started to see against the Pirates at the weekend and take that into Friday to keep going forward and making our game better,” Allen explained.

Cov have won their two home games this calendar year but lost away at Ampthill and Hartpury College. Their last away victory came at Goldington Road in early December, when the Blues were defeated 37-12 in front of their home fans in a Championship Cup encounter.

“Bedford have become more of a team in how they’re playing, they’re kicking the ball a bit more and being a bit more pragmatic which is working for them. We need to be on our game if we’re going to get the result,” Allen said.

Coventry’s newest young gun James Martin scored an individual, long-distance try which caused not only a spark on the pitch but also on social media. His catch and run against the Pirates was completed as he applied the afterburners to cross the line.

His Jonny May-esque try on debut wasn’t the only part which pleased Allen.

“He’s been away at Cambridge working hard, so we had the confidence to put him in, and we have to back those players in and around it’s game, just and the about getting squad. sharpening It all was those brilliant, other his areas finish,” better said and the former we know Leicester he can Tigers centre.

“Mistakes happen, we’re all aware of that, and we see how players like James [Martin] react to that in training. Is it positively? Does he lose his head? All those things we saw in James at the weekend came out from our environment and where we’re trying to get to.”
