CITY TO GET MORE SPEED CAMERAS

- By TOM DAVIS Local Democracy Reporter

UP to three new average speed cameras are to be installed in Coventry.

Coventry City Council has announced £300,000 funding for the road safety measures as part of its budget for 2020/21.

Four average speed cameras are already in place across the city.

However the location of the new cameras has yet to be decided.

Cllr John Mutton, cabinet member for finance, said: “Officers will make recommendations on which roads can most benefit from it and then it will be the cabinet member’s decision.

“It’s good news. Anything that reduces people being involved in accidents, particularly avoiding serious injuries or fatalities has got to be good news.”

Coventry’s first average speed cameras went up on Ansty Road and London Road in January 2019, while two further cameras were installed on Binley Road and Henley Road in January this year.

Binley Road and Henley Road were chosen as the location for cameras as they had the highest number of people killed or seriously injured in the latest threeyear period, with five deaths and 15 injuries between them. Cameras on London Road and Ansty Road were installed after a combined 54 personal injury collisions in three years, including five deaths.

“The one on the London Road is working remarkably well,” Cllr Mutton added.

The £300,000 funding will pay for the initial equipment, while fines are expected to help with ongoing running costs in the future.

The cameras will be installed in the 2020/21 financial year.

Funding will be signed off by cabinet as part of the council’s budget-setting process on February 25.
