MAKE PANCAKE DAY PIN BADGES

-

WeAr these badges and celebrate pancake day all year round.

Using a resin-based clay will make your badges hard-wearing but other clays can be toughened up by adding a couple of layers of varnish. Clear nail polish is ideal for this.

YOU WILL NEED Air-drying clay; badge pins (find these at haberdashery shops or online); felt scraps; paper; sand paper; nail polish; two cocktail sticks; scissors; strong glue; acrylic paints; coloured pens PANCAKE IN A PAN

1. Take a ball of clay and model the round part of your pan first.

2. Carefully insert a section of cocktail stick into the top edge of your pan. This will help keep your pan handle strong. Model your pan handle around the cocktail stick. Allow to dry (this can take up to 24 hours).

3. Glue on your badge pin.

4. Paint your pan with metallic acrylic or nail polish (we used silver nail polish).

5. Cut out a circle of pancake-coloured felt and glue it in place.

LEMON & SUGAR CUBES

1. Model a lemon shape. Push a short section of cocktail stick through your lemon so that it sticks out about 5mm on either side.

2. This will allow you to attach the sugar cubes. When dry, glue on the badge pin. To make the sugar, model two small cubes of clay and texture them by pressing each side gently onto a sheet of sandpaper.

3. Use a cocktail stick to make a hole in one of the edges of each cube to allow you to attach them to the lemon.

4. When the cubes are dry, paint with a thin layer of white acrylic.

5. When dry, put a small blob of strong glue on each end of the lemon’s cocktail stick and push the sugar cubes in place.

MAPLE SYRUP BOTTLE

1. Make a small bottle shape from your clay. Make sure it is slightly larger than your badge pin. Leave it to dry then glue on the badge pin.

2. Paint your bottle and lid and leave to dry.

3. Cut a label shape to fit your bottle from white paper and decorate with coloured pens. Glue it and varnish if necessary.

JUICY STRAWBERRY

1. Roll your clay into an egg-shape, then flatten it down at the top and bottom so it resembles a strawberry.

2. Prick the surface of the strawberry with a cocktail stick. This will give the appearance of seeds. Take a look at a real strawberry (or a photo of one) to help you with the pattern.

3. When dry, use strong glue to stick the badge pin on.

4. Paint your strawberry all over with red acrylic and, when dry, use a tiny brush to paint in the yellow seeds. Once dry you can varnish if necessary.

5. Cut a small leaf shape out of dark green felt and glue it to the top of strawberry.
