CILLA: THE LOST TAPES ITV, 9pm
“THERE are some people who are stars, people that actually twinkle.”
Sir Cliff Richard is talking of course about Cilla Black – singer, TV presenter and trailblazer of women in showbusiness, who died in 2015 aged 72.
When her house was sold a couple of years later, a treasure trove of home movies was discovered when her three sons were clearing out their childhood home.
Sheridan Smith, who played Cilla in an ITV miniseries, narrates this gorgeous, nostalgic and captivating glimpse into a life lived in the spotlight.
Dating as far back as 1969, home videos reveal everything from ski trips with George Martin and Ringo Starr and more recently partying with friends at Simon Cowell’s LA pad, to home life with her children and husband Bobby and some amazing unseen performances.
An audio interview with Cilla plays over much of it, giving a real insight into the much-loved star.
She says: “Girl Power and all that, well I’m the original Girl Power.”
You can’t argue with that.
HOME Channel 4, 10pm
THERE are always so many memorable scenes and quotable lines in this clever comedy about a Syrian asylum seeker taking up residence in Dorking.
The moment creator Rufus Jones, who plays Peter, had a total meltdown after being made redundant in last week’s episode, is still emblazoned on viewers’ brains. There was nudity. And there was tree-waving.
This week’s opening scene is a belter. Sami (Youssef Kerkour) is on a bus. A man next to him is speaking Arabic on the phone and another passenger takes offence.
“Oi! You’re in my country now. English! He could be talking about anything, it’s dangerous,” yells the woman. Sami takes it upon himself to intervene.
Meanwhile, Katy (Rebekah Staton) is summoned to face the music at school, and everyone is on edge as they wait for Elliot (Douglas Henshall) to arrive to discuss the mortgage.
All except John (Oaklee Pendergast), who can’t wait to see his dad for the first time in years.
