Spate of charity collection bag thefts across the region

- By CLAIRE HARRISON News Reporter claire.harrison@reachplc.com

THIEVES have stolen muchneeded charity collection bags from outside homes in Coventry, Nuneaton and Rugby every day for the past two weeks.

Such is the scale of the problem and the impact on the good cause, Neighbourhood Watch officials have contacted the Air Ambulance Service.

It was then the true extent of the thefts was revealed.

A post on the Nuneaton and Bedworth Neighbourhood Watch page on Facebook said: “Following a number of reports of thefts of charity collection bags in the area, we have been in contact with the Air Ambulance Service regarding the scale and impact of the issue.

“A spokesperson for the service has told us ‘Unfortunately, yes, we are experiencing vast amounts of theft in the Nuneaton, Rugby and Coventry areas. Thefts have occurred everyday for the last two weeks, if not longer.’”

It has been suggested the police have been made aware of thefts.

To stop the thefts, those who want to donate can call the office on 01536 480007 and arrange a safe collection.

Alternatively, bags should be left out for collection after 9am as most thefts take place overnight.

Collections are made by vans carrying the Air Ambulance Service livery and if anyone sees a bag being collected by another vehicle, they are being urged to call the police on 101.

Details can also be passed on via the independent charity Crimestoppers.

The charity is free to call from a landline and confidential, on 0800 555 111.
