Police in vow to continue double murder probe

- By BEN ECCLESTON Crime Reporter ben.eccleston@reachplc.com

POLICE say they know who carried out a double murder in Coventry that saw one of the victims kidnapped and tortured before being killed.

This week marks two years since Daniel Shaw died in Tile Hill after being found with gunshot wounds to his chest in Copland Place.

His killing was linked by detectives to the disappearance of Johnny Robbins who vanished four days earlier on March 21, 2018.

Police have stated that they believe Johnny, 33, was kidnapped and tortured after being taken to an address in Torrington Avenue before being murdered.

Sadly, his body has not been found to this date.

And now on the two-year anniversary of Daniel’s death, West Midlands Police has stated that they know who killed the two men, why they did so and vowed to put “these violent and cowardly murderers in prison for many years”.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Mallett, who is leading the investigation, said: “We know who committed these murders and why they did it.

“The law-abiding people living in Tile Hill in fear of these people have told us. But because they are frightened of this group, they are understandably reluctant to tell us what they know formally.

“I want to assure anyone who can give us information that will help us put these violent and cowardly murderers in prison for many years, that we can keep them safe for doing the right thing and giving Johnny and Daniel’s family justice.

“This investigation will not stop until that time and I want the following message to be crystal clear to those who are responsible - the community knows who you are. And so do we.”

West Midlands Police say a team of detectives are still working on the case which has seen a number of people arrested over the past two years.

They have been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences and have all been released while investigations continue.

Last year police appealed for sightings of Ryan Hobday, aged 28 at the time of the murders, from Coventry, who is wanted in connection with the murders. They are still seeking his whereabouts, but believe he may also have been murdered.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “While we’ve had lots of information and intelligence from the community, we know some people are frightened to talk to us.

“We still have a team of detectives working on this investigation and they desperately need anyone with any information, no matter how small it may seem, to make contact.”

DCI Chris Mallett added: “For two years Daniel and Johnny’s families and friends have had to suffer not only their tragic loss, but also have not had the answers they so desperately need about what happened and who was responsible.

“Johnny’s family have not even been able to put him to rest properly - an absolutely heart-breaking situation for them to be in.

“Two innocent men lost their lives in the most horrific circumstances, and the pain and damage that causes all who loved them is indescribable.

“We remain as committed as we were when we first began our investigation, to finding who did this and bringing them to justice.

“They may think they’ve got away with what they did, but I’d like them to know that our investigation is still very much alive and we’re piecing together a huge amount of information.”
