Coventry city centre work halted due to the coronavirus

- Local Democracy Reporter By TOM DAVIS

REDEVELOPMENT works in Coventry city centre have been halted to help the council focus on “essential services only” during the coronavirus pandemic.

A vast number of public realm works were taking place in the city centre to help dress Coventry up in its best light ahead of the City of Culture 2021 celebrations.

Work includes the redevelopment of the Upper Precinct, Smithford Way and Market Way, train station upgrades, and removal of Coventry Point as part of the City Centre South project.

But sites have been closed under government advice as the country attempts to stop the spread of Covid19.

Cllr Jim O’boyle, cabinet member for jobs and regeneration, said: “These works will be put on hold until such a time comes that they can commence.

“We are following the advice and guidance of the government and it is important that everyone stays safe.

“That is what is paramount here when we go through this crisis.

“The advice given is good advice and I encourage everyone to follow it so hopefully we can get back to normal soon.”

Whilst no date has been set on when the works will resume, Cllr O’boyle remains confident it will get done in good time - but delays are now inevitable.

“There will inevitably be a delay on works,” he added.

“They have not finished, they have just been halted until we can restart them as this is about making sure our city is fit for the 21st century.

“It will be and we still have the money in place.”
