Heartless vandals target Cov special needs school

A SPECIAL needs junior school in Coventry was targeted twice in a matter of days by vandals at the height of the coronaviru­s lockdown.

Castle Wood School in Deedmore Road, Wood End, had a number of windows smashed overnight between Wednesday, March 25 and Thursday, March 26.

In a separate incident intruders were spotted on the roof of the school on the evening of Thursday, March 26.

Castle Wood School is a broad spectrum, special primary school, which caters for pupils aged between three and 11. It has 156 pupils.

In a tweet posted on March 26, Castle Wood School said: “During these challengin­g times where we are trying to keep our special needs children safe sadly the school has been targeted by vandals overnight and resulted in a number of windows being smashed. Stay at home, don’t vandalise the school.”

The following day the school tweeted: “We had vandals again last night on our roof.”

West Midlands Police is investigat­ing the first incident where windows were smashed.

Cannabis plants were found inside a house where a severe fire broke out.

The ground floor of the property had completely gone up in flames by the time firefighte­rs arrived in St James Lane in Willenhall.

A number of 999 calls had been made about the fire at around 9.30pm on Sunday, March

29.

Once inside, six firefighte­rs sewarched the property for signs investigat­ing reports of criminal damage to Castle Wood School in Deedmore Road, Wood End, Coventry sometime between 5pm on 25 March and 6am on 26 March. Anyone with informatio­n can quote crime reference 20CV/76945E/20.”

Anyone with informatio­n is urged to contact West Midlands Police on of anyone inside and found no-one. They put out the flames within three minutes.

West Midlands Police officers then discovered 30 cannabis plants inside the property, which will now be destroyed. Crews from Binley were sent out to lead the operation, with an engine from Coventry station sent as back-up. 101. The vandalism was highlighte­d by parents of children at the school on social media.

One posted: “I would like to put this out there for people to keep an extra eye out, my son’s school has been vandalised twice this week. Castle Wood Special Needs School on Deedmore Road, Coventry.

The crews remained at the scene until around 1am making sure the property safe.

A tweet by West Midlands Fire Service said the tampered electrics put the fire fighters at risk.

Watch Commander Mullen from Binley fire station said: “At 9.39 last night we had reports of a house fire.

“We arrived and found the ground floor of the house in flames and at the time it was unknown if there was anyone in the property. To search, we sent three pairs of two. Luckily, there was nobody in the building.”

“This is a school for children with disabiliti­es as if it’s not hard enough at the moment for staff and children.

“People supposed to be on lockdown but instead they are creating havoc.

“Please if anyone lives near by keep an eye out and call the police. Many thanks.”
