THESE are unprecedented times and like many organisations, the BBC has had to make some changes in order to continue to deliver trusted information whilst maintaining a sense of normality.

The result of which means some of your favourite shows and presenters on BBC CWR may temporarily be in a different place.

For example, you can now join me on a Saturday morning presenting a programme that incorporates the very popular gardening phone-in with our resident expert.

When the Boss said I would be looking after the programme for a while, I reminded him that what I know about gardening, I could write on the back of a postage stamp and still have room to spare.

That feeling of dread soon turned into excitement. For starters, for many people their gardens have now become a place of sanctuary during lockdown. I also thought it was great opportunity for me to learn more about the green-fingered fraternity from one of the nicest blokes you could ever hope to meet.

Darren Rudge, known as ‘the Laughing Gardener’, is our resident expert, who has spent his career teaching and managing horticultural and other qualifications, as well as running a successful garden design consultancy.

He was one of the first recipients of the City and Guilds medal of excellence awarded for his inspirational teaching and training methods in horticulture.

His career has seen him become a professional associate with the Royal Horticultural Society and a judge at prestigious national shows.

He also mentors school children with the aim of getting them involved in gardening and living healthier lifestyles.

The married dad of three has had some very proud moments during his career, including designing and installing a memorial garden in commemoration of WW1 soldiers and a garden of reflection for a local hospice set in a woodland.

It is clear to see that Darren is passionate about inspiring people to interact with their green spaces, which enhances their wellbeing at the same time.

If you have a gardening question, why not give us a ring on Saturday morning from 10am.
