BEST OF THE REST

FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER Channel 4, 10pm

THE big question of the night for the Goodman family is just how did a plastic bag end up in a tree?

Martin, played by Paul Ritter, is irrationally obsessed with the bag and wants to remove it immediately.

“It’s an eyesore!”

He has a big stick and enthusiasm, but little else. “When you’ve grown another 10m Martin do let us know,” says Jackie (Tamsin Greig).

Meanwhile, Adam (Simon Bird) has been interviewed about his music in the local magazine. However he neglected to mention his mother even though he named-checked everyone else – even Aunty Val.

Cue the arrival of Aunty Val (Tracyann Oberman) who is delighted that she’s now a celebrity. “Not every day you see your name in print!” she says, leaving Jackie livid.

And of course, eccentric neighbour Jim (Mark Heap) is always hovering, desperate to be involved in the Goodman family Friday night, but generally causing more chaos.

Another laugh-out-loud instalment.

HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU BBC1, 9pm

BACK for an incredible 59th series, this sarcasm-loaded panel show that pokes fun at the week is just what the doctor ordered.

It might just be the only way to take in current affairs and still balance out the deluge of bad news.

Team captains Paul Merton and Ian Hislop will be in their usual places, with Steph Mcgovern as this week’s host. Guest panellists are comedian Miles Jupp and journalist Helen Lewis.

It’s reported that they will be in their usual seats, although likely to be spaced a bit further away from each other, but it will be an audience-free zone.

Fortunately – or unfortunately – while the set up will be oddly quieter, it certainly hasn’t been a quiet news week. And there we all were wondering what anyone would talk about after Brexit.

If you’re looking for a glimpse of news-related humour amid the national crisis, this is definitely the show to watch.
