THE TEAM SQUABBLES AND EDWINA CURRIE DOWNS TOOLS AS THE GOING GETS TOUGHER FOR OUR CELEBRITY PILGRIMS

-

MIDWAY through their 1,250km journey, the goodwill between the seven celebrities is no longer running at full and people are getting tetchy. Adrian Chiles has been banished to his own room as he’s keeping everyone awake with his loud snoring and there’s plenty of coffee and gritted teeth the next morning.

This is a thought-provoking series, which follows famous faces with wildly different religious views on an ancient and difficult trek. It’s no wonder that at some point there would be some conflict.

Converted Catholic Adrian is joined by Christian Fatima Whitbread, Muslims Amar Latif and Mim Shaikh, lapsed Jew Edwina Currie and atheists

Dom Joly and Pauline Mclynn.

They are on their final day in Serbia, searching for a monastery hidden in the forests of the Sicevo gorge.

After a difficult hike they meet Sister Simeona, an Orthodox nun, who explains how she started her monastic life in Essex of all places.

Later the group travels on to Bulgaria, arriving in the capital Sofia on Bulgarian Independence Day.

Then the pilgrims must prepare to climb the challenging Rila Mountain pass, but Edwina bails out. “Maybe if I were 20 years younger,” she says.

While on the hike, the rest of the group end up splitting into two and arguing over who is going too fast or too slow.

“I hate religious people,” gests Dom.

And afterwards, Adrian wonders if there’s any point to the whole pilgrimage. “I’m not really feeling it,” he says, “I’m trying to work out why that is.”
