Fraudsters target self-isolating residents

- By CLAIRE HARRISON News Reporter claire.harrison01@reachplc.com

CRUEL fraudsters are using the coronavirus crisis to con cash out of self-isolating residents.

There have been reports across Warwickshire of residents receiving unexpected doorstep visits from people offering to buy or collect shopping on behalf of those who are self-isolating.

The thieves then take cash up front and do not return.

In other incidents, rogue traders are also proposing ‘doorstep cleansing services’ that offer to clean drives and doorways to kill bacteria and help prevent the spread of the virus.

Fake sanitisers, face masks and Covid-19 swabbing kits are also reportedly being sold doorto-door.

“These products can often be dangerous and unsafe,” said a Warwickshire Trading Standards spokesperson.

They want to urge people not to fall victim to any cold callers to their door.

Instead, if they need help, they are being urged to contact Warwickshire County Council’s dedicated helpline.

Through community hubs, packages of food are being delivered to the homes who have been identified by the government on its shielding list. Anyone identified as extremely vulnerable and without access to existing support networks can call the dedicated support number 0800 4081447 for support and advice.

The Warwickshire local welfare scheme can also help people at times of unavoidable crisis when people have no other means of support.

The scheme provides basic and essential help for food and energy.

People can check if they are eligible and apply to the scheme by calling 01926 359 182 or emailing warwickshirelocalwelfarescheme@warwickshire.gov. uk with their contact details.
