Bin collectors says thanks after public show support

- By TOM DAVIS Local Democracy Reporter

HARD-WORKING bin crews have been left heartened by the support received from residents who are helping to keep spirits high during testing times.

The coronavirus has put many council workers under greater pressure as the authority prioritises supporting essential services and the most vulnerable.

Bin collectors are among those carrying on with their jobs during the government’s stay-at-home order to ensure waste collection in the city runs smoothly.

While Covid-19 is leading to some challenges in staff shortages ensuring staff are kept safe while they work, workers have been kept in high spirits by the warmth shown across Coventry.

As they make their way through the city’s streets they have been greeted by everything from a friendly wave, a thumbs up, a round of applause, to handmade drawings from children.

“The public have been amazing with their support to these guys who are keeping things going,” cabinet member for city services Cllr Pat Hetherton said.

“People are coming out and clapping to them, waving and giving them the thumbs up, and kids are even making pictures for them.

“The good will has been amazing and it is really appreciated and we want that to continue.”

The city council posted on Twitter: “Our bin crews would like to say a huge thank you to everyone in Coventry for the support they have been showing recently!

“From handmade drawings, to thumbs up and waves - your support means a lot! Let’s keep spirits high.”

Bosses are working to ensure there is minimal disruption to the service, although have warned residents to expect some delays but promised extra crews are returning to pick up any bins missed. However garden waste collections have been suspended.
