PICK OF THE DAY

YOUR HOME MADE PERFECT BBC2, 8pm

AKING home renovation shows to the next level, this is the makeover series that allows people to try before they buy. Homeowners with a big design crisis have their problems solved by two top architects.

Then they get to put on some big goggles and enjoy a virtual reality tour of what their new home would look like, before picking the winning pitch.

It’s all absolutely thrilling for some reason and occasionally emotional as owners sob over their brand new doorknobs or chrome taps.

Now we’re all stuck inside our own four walls, we can understand that we’re talking homes, not houses here.

Angela Scanlon is a witty host, suitably mocking as rival architects Laura Jane Clark and Robert Jamison extol the virtues of a wooden bath in the kitchen (yes, really) or wax lyrical about space and light.

The virtual reality transformations will blow you away, revealing everything from sleep pods and secret doors as walls fall away and staircases appear.

First to get the VR treatment are Silvia and Julian, who live with their 20-year-old son Frankie in a poky bungalow in Brighton.

Low lights include a kitchen so small it would be a squash for The Borrowers, a beautiful garden that they have no view of, a hall pointlessly overrun by a giant staircase and a nightmare planning restriction.

“This house squashes everything about who we are,” says Julian.

The first pitch leaves the couple crying for joy. “They’ve wept!” says Angela.

The bar has been set and it will take some beating.
