Posh owner reveals his City secret

PETERBOROUGH United owner Darragh Macanthony has revealed that, were he to be granted a fresh start in club ownership, he would be tempted to invest in Coventry City.

The Sky Blues are currently flying high in League One and are itching to get back on the field to continue their promotion push.

Meanwhile, Posh, boosted by top scorer Ivan Toney, have remained in the play-off hunt all season long.

Coventry owners SISU have endured plenty of struggles since taking over the club in 2007, twice moving the club away from the City and becoming wrapped up in a long list of legal battles.

But in recent seasons they have made a success of lower league football and, should the season resume as planned, look set to graduate from it with promotion to the Championship.

“If I were starting again and it wasn’t Posh, the clubs that I would look to get would be Coventry, Bradford, Swindon and a couple of others,” he tweeted.

He continued: “And there’s no harm in reading the menu when you’re on a diet.”

While Coventry and Peterborough have enjoyed success this season, the same cannot be said for Sunderland.

The Black Cats boast a wage bill well above their League One rivals but have now fluffed their lines in the promotion race two years on the bounce.

“That’s the problem when you buy a Ferrari and only have a couple of years of insurance and petrol money,” Macanthony joked.

“A club that size needs mega-wealthy owners, I’m afraid.

“I can’t fault their guys trying. What a club, if you get it right.”

Sunderland yesterday revealed they had furloughed first-team players, contracted academy players and backroom staff.

Sunderland added there was “no intention to ask any players or staff to take a wage reduction or deferral on their salary” and that all employees will be paid in full.
