Testing centre at Ricoh Arena opens

COUNCIL cemeteries across Nuneaton and Bedworth have re-opened.

As of 1pm on April 20 people can once again visit loved ones in cemeteries across the borough.

The council had taken the tough decision to close them last month but, following guidance from the government, a U-turn has now been made.

In a statement, councillor Ian Lloyd, cabinet member for arts and leisure at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said: “The decision to close the cemeteries was not taken lightly, but in line with Government regulations and I am now pleased to say that following the recent announcements from Robert Jenrick, we can now once again open the cemeteries to allow bereaved families to tend to their loved ones’ graves.

“Please could everyone attending be sure to abide by the social distancing guidelines to ensure the safety of all.”

Strict guidelines remain in place for anyone visiting any of the borough’s cemeteries.

People are being asked to adhere to social distancing guidance:

Do not visit the cemetery if you are displaying any symptoms of coronavirus.

In order to protect staff, please do not approach or get close to any ground maintenance operatives or funeral directors in the cemetery.

If a funeral is taking place (or a grave has been excavated) then you must stay away from that area.

Funeral restrictions: As per government guidelines there are restrictions and no more than ten mourners will be allowed at any graveside service. This allows for four mourners at the graveside, six further mourners at an appropriate distance at least five metres away (this may be subject to change)

The FBCA (Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities) has indicated that these 10 mourners should be made up of spouse/ partner, parents/carers, brothers/sisters, children (and partners).

Cemetery opening times: April: 9am until 7pm. May until August: 9am until 8pm. September: 9am until 7pm. October: 9am until 5.30pm. November until February: 9am until 4.30pm.
