Neighbours planning socially-distanced street parties
NEIGHBOURHOODS across Nuneaton and Bedworth are gearing up to celebrate VE day with socially-distanced street parties.
With official and public events cancelled due to the coronavirus lockdown, many communities across the two towns have come up with their own ways to mark the milestone.
In Barbridge Road, Bulkington, residents will be pitching up gazebos on front gardens, getting kitted out in fancy dress, listening to wartime music, decorating the front of their homes and will be raising a toast to the nation.
In Skye Close in Nuneaton, the whole street has been invited to decorate their homes and meet on their driveways for a party.
Nuneaton Memories, Cartwright Hands and Jonathan Fireworks have joined forces to offer streets the chance to win a commemorative VE Day 75 coin.
They are asking people to post a photograph of their decorated homes, street or garden on the Nuneaton Memories page on Facebook to be in with a chance to win the prize.
Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is also encouraging people to mark the special occasion.
Councillor Julie Jackson, Town Hall leader, said: “During a time that has been very difficult for us all, helping to commemorate VE Day is a great way not only to honour the World War II generation, but also to help spread a bit of cheer across the borough and lift spirits.
“We look forward to seeing the fabulous creative efforts from people across the borough to help us celebrate.”
The council is asking people to share their photographs on the council’s page on Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag #Veboroughbunting and tag @ Nbbcouncil.
