Great opportunity for real change

-

AS we all adapt to the new normal one thing is becoming clear. Working from home/staggered starts and everything else used to reduce the impact of the virus also gives us a window of opportunity to make some serious changes for the better.

I was recently made aware that 35,000 people commute in and then out of Coventry everyday. Having worked to get people setup and running offsite we have proven that the majority of that daily travel is not required. If you check the current air quality data for Coventry you’ll see that this has greatly improved and will also help reduce future illness.

My fear would be that we would try to go back to the old ways of doing just because it’s what we know rather than changing course. We have the City of Culture coming up as well and I think it’s the perfect time to push the button on some radical ideas.

That got me thinking about your article in the Coventry Telegraph from January about converting some of the ring road into a cycleway with trees/hedges and flowers planted along the route to help bring more greenery to the area and to reduce traffic. That traffic may now reduce anyway so why not take the chance?

Imagine the google maps view of Coventry with greenery around it to help filter the air that we breathe and to improve the mental health of the community (which it is going to need once we get out of the worst of this). Mr Jackson, Coventry.

Coronavirus advice confused from start

THE coronavirus death toll in this country is shocking and appalling.

The government clearly started the lockdown far too late and has consistently taken advice from the so called experts that has been confused to say the least.

Boris thought this was going to be his Churchill moment, how I wish someone like him was in charge. J.smith, Nuneaton.
