Nearly half of care homes in city have reported cases of coronavirus

- By CLAIRE MILLER & RACHEL STRETTON

ALMOST half of care homes in Coventry have reported outbreaks of coronavirus.

Figures from Public Health England reveal there’s been reported outbreaks of coronavirus in 35 of the city’s care homes - just under 47 per cent.

In Warwickshire 67 of a total of 175 care homes have reported outbreaks - just over 38 per cent.

Figures for individual districts within the county show that some areas have been affected worse than others. In Stratford, 49 per cent (21 out of 43) care homes have reported outbreaks, whilst in Nuneaton and Bedworth only 31 per cent (11 out of 36) have done so.

Across England, a total of 5,546 suspected or confirmed Covid-19 outbreaks have been reported in care homes.

This data comes from reports to Public Health England (PHE) of infectious disease outbreaks in residential and nursing homes.

There is some cause for optimism as the figures show a fall in the number of new outbreaks being reported, compared to a peak several weeks ago.

Last week (ending May 10), there were four new suspected or confirmed outbreaks in care homes in the area.

That was down from 11 newly reported the week before, and down from a peak of 21 reports in the week ending April 19.

Any individual care home will only be included in the dataset once. If a care home has reported more than one outbreak, only the first is included in this dataset.

However, it’s not possible to know from the data if the reported outbreaks are still ongoing.

In the week ending May 10, 418 new outbreaks were reported - that was a drop from 699 a week before.

However, while most regions saw falls, in the South East, the number of suspected or confirmed outbreaks being reported rose from 103 to 118.

Care homes in the North East appear to have been hardest hit by Covid-19 - nearly half (48 per cent) have reported an outbreak.

That compares to a quarter (26 per cent) in the South West.

In the West Midlands, 35.7 per cent of care homes have reported an outbreak.
