Residents say they are struggling to get tip slots

COUNCIL bosses have given advice on how to get an appointment at Nuneaton and Warwickshire’s tips - after complaints from some residents that they have waited weeks for a slot to open up.

Some householders have told the Telegraph that, despite repeated attempts, they have not been able to access one of the online slots needed to use Judkins in Nuneaton.

One resident said he had been trying to get an appointment for weeks.

“Stacks of rubbish to throw from ten weeks furloughed and it impossible to book a slot at Judkins,” he said.

“What are people supposed to do? The tip website says “free pick a time, click to book” and all slots are taken.

“I am sure there will be stacks of people in the same position. I know these are unprecedented times but the rubbish must go somewhere legally.”

We contacted Warwickshire County Council in regards to the concerns.

A Shire Hall spokesman said the online booking system is allowing the Warwickshire recycling centres to operate with safe social distancing in place and it is also preventing traffic queues.

“Judkins recycling centre is very popular and is often fully booked a few days in advance,” the spokesman said.

“However, there are usually spaces if you look further ahead, for example, on Monday morning, there were still spaces for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons.

“Yesterday (Monday), appointments for the weekend have been released. The appointments for the following week will be released on subsequent evenings this week. These releases are announced on Warwickshire Recycles Facebook and Twitter pages.

“We are ensuring that households do not book more than 1 appointment a fortnight, to allow everyone a chance to bring waste that may have built up over the past two months.”

The spokesman concluded: “We ask householders to use their kerbside service and to consider home composting as an environmentally friendly way to recycle grass cutting and hedge trimmings.”

Demand for appointments was so high that all of the slots for the Tuttle Hill-based facility were booked in just over 24 hours.

There are new strict rules in place and these include the fact that people cannot simply turn up as they will be turned away.

The layout has also been changed to help ensure social distancing guidelines are met.

Warwickshire County Council has also warned that those who do not stick to social distancing guidelines once inside the tip could face a fine.
