Why celebration was so Sweet for boss Robins

-

MARK Robins has revealed the story behind Coventry City’s incredible celebration video that sums up the spirit that drove the team to the League One title.

The Sky Blues boss took footage of his staff and players inside the dressing room at Portman Road following the club’s final league game before the lockdown kicked in.

Robins had no idea that the season was about to pull up short following the 1-0 win over the Tractor Boys, but captured what turned out to be the climax of the campaign and last time the group have been able to celebrate together.

“After the Ipswich game I took video of everyone celebrating in the dressing room,” he explained.

“I don’t know why I did it because I never do that.

“When we got promoted I gave it to Mark Hornby to put out on social media, so it was just strange how things worked out.

“Watching it back is quite emotional because it takes you back and I’m desperate to get back in those situations.

“But we released it just to show people what it was like all season.

“They have been magnificent and fully deserved it, and it was like that in the dressing room after all the games we won.”

The footage, which was released half an hour before City announced their promotion to the Championship on Tuesday, June 9, shows the players and backroom staff singing Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline which climaxes with the chorus: “Sweet Caroline... Good times never seemed so good...”

“It was like that after all the games we won because after working hard on the pitch we wanted to enjoy it,” he said, “especially after a big win like the one at Ipswich.

“We sang Sweet Caroline from early on in the season and it was particularly enthusiastic after the Ipswich game basically because we were so confident after that game, and didn’t think we’d lose another game.”
