City await league fate

THE EFL are set to meet with their board this week to discuss the start date of the 2020/21 season, Coventry City’s first campaign back in the Championship.

The Sky Blues are so far yet to learn when both their summer and the summer transfer window will end as the excitement grows ahead of their return to the second division.

Coventry players remain on furlough after sealing their promotion and League One title, the club’s first title triumph since 1967, and are awaiting news as to when they will get back on the training pitch.

But the answers could be on their way as early as tomorrow with the EFL set to hold their weekly board meeting with the start of next season understood to be high on the agenda.

Mark Robins is waiting for a 2020/21 start date to be confirmed before calling his players back to the club’s Ryton-ondunsmore training base and starting their gruelling pre-season routine.

The much-beloved Sky Blues chief will work backwards from a date, once confirmed, to ensure his side get the best preparation possible ahead of their Championship challenge with behind-closed-doors friendlies on the cards.

Reports have suggested that the start of the forthcoming season could come during September with the transfer window stretching into October, but those dates are no more than speculation at this stage.

It is also expected that the Championship season will start as it has finished this term, behind closed doors.

Coventry have budgeted cautiously ahead of next term and have prepared for a scenario in which no fans will be present until the half-way point, the Coventry Telegraph understands, in a move that will protect the club from the worst-case scenario.
