Like to be beside the seaside? ANCHORS AWAY!
Is a coastal getaway the dream? SAM MASSEY shows you it is possible to get that beachside look no matter how far you are from the sea
INTERIORS inspiration can come from anywhere. A particular period in history, the luscious greens of the great outdoors or perhaps something as simple as a favourite colour. But one of the most enduring interior styles is coastal chic. A staple of holiday lets and seaside retreats, beachy-inspired interiors can work anywhere, even in the most industrial of surroundings.
So if you’re dreaming of a coastal getaway, now might be the perfect time to bring the seaside inside!
ONCE upon a time, coastal interiors meant blue-striped curtains, anchors aplenty and miniature ships on every surface.
Not anymore. Coastal themes have, mercifully, moved on considerably. Today’s interpretation of beach-inspired interiors is all about creating a relaxing haven and the feeling of a never-ending holiday.
Muted colours and textured layers are key.
Start with a relaxing backdrop, one that you can use as a blank canvas around which you can build the rest of your seaside theme.
Colour-wise, off whites work well and are reminiscent of the white cottages dotted around the coast. Sandy shades of beige which look, well, sandy, and soft greys that evoke the feeling of stormy waves also work beautifully.
If you really want to cement the look, consider a wood-effect wallpaper to add a calming feel to the walls. Shop around for one in a lighter hue that gives the feeling of a driftwood.
LAYER UP
ONCE your background is sorted, consider adding some more seaside feels.
Depending on your budget, you may wish to invest in new furnishings in a light shade of wood for that laid-back vibe. But if not, work with what you have. Why not consider upcycling furniture that’s seen better days with chalk paint to create a rustic new feature piece?

Alternatively, shop around for accessories that will work with your existing interiors. A new rug, a selection of cushions and a throw or two over your sofa will help create a cosy haven. Stick to simple styles and fuss-free finishes for a laid-back feel.
When you are shopping around for accessories, it’s really important to consider colour. Blues are naturally the go-to hues, but other muted shades work well too. Just be consistent and don’t mix and match too many.
However, feel free to play around with different tones and mix up patterns for a relaxed finish.
FINISHING TOUCHES
You can never have too many accessories when it comes to a coastal pad. Wooden accessories complement the coastal feel beautifully, so shop around for driftwood coat hooks, serving platters and picture frames to add interest.
And while wooden boats and anchors might be a thing of the past, consider a more subtle nod to the coast, such as a wooden oar on the side of a shed or garage or a woven rope light fixture.
You might wish to incorporate your favourite seaside resort with a street sign or vintage poster print.
And if authentic pieces are on the pricey side, shop around. There are plenty of independent designers who trade through Not On The High Street or Etsy who can create reasonably-priced bespoke creations paying homage to your favourite seaside destination.
Once you have the feel of the seaside, try to capture the scent of it too. The coast is filled with its own unique scent which many fragrance houses have tried to capture in a candle or diffuser.
Not sure which to go for?
A diffuser will emit a constant aroma, while a candle will only work when it’s lit.
But don’t forget it will also add to the chilled vibe too.
