AN outdoor cinema event at Coventry Cathedral this summer has been postponed - but classic film fans can still get their fill at a venue in Rugby.

Summer Screens has been running for a number of years and offers cinema-goers a unique experience watching classic films in iconic locations, such as the ruins of Coventry Cathedral.

Some events at venues including in Coventry have now been postponed until 2021 but others are set to go forward - with strict social distancing measures in place.

Organisers say that while people who have been to these events before will notice some differences, the “overall experience and heart of our events will be the same”.

Coventry Cathedral events will return in 2021. However film lovers in the city can still go along to Summer Screens events at Rugby School and Birmingham Botanical Gardens this summer.

Other events are taking place across the country, including in Newbury, Reading, Winchester, Southampton and Basingstoke.

Films being shown at Summer Screens 2020 include a mixture of recent blockbusters to popular classics such as 1917, Back to the Future, Dirty Dancing, Jurassic Park, Rocketman and the Greatest Showman.

Events are taking place from Wednesday, August 12 to Saturday,

August 15 in Rugby with films yet to be announced.

Dates and films for Birmingham Botanical Gardens have yet to be confirmed. Tickets are expected to go on sale for both venues soon.

Summer Screens says the health and wellbeing of guests and staff is their number one priority.

Each venue is running at around 25 per cent capacity, so guests will be able to maintain social distancing. Seats are provided and spaced out and there will be a one-way system in place.

The company has also increased cleaning measures and made sure that hand sanitiser is available throughout.

In previous years, guests have been allowed to bring their own chairs but, due to the restrictions, that won’t be allowed this year.
