Family’s incredible support for Myton Hospices

-

NINE-YEAR-OLD Tommy Young has handwritten a letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson in support of The Myton Hospices.

Tommy’s dad, Alan, died at Warwick Myton Hospice in October 2019 and in his letter Tommy asks the Prime Minister and government to “… give some money to the hospices so they do not shut down.” Tommy also writes about the support him, his mum Kelly and older brother Shay received from Myton.

Alan Young was just 49 when he died of stage 4 cancer at the hospice, spending 11 days on the Inpatient Unit. Being at Myton helped him to be himself, and for his wife and children to be a family again.

After his death, Kelly said: “He knew what was going to happen, but he felt safe at Myton. And the pressure felt so much less for us as a family once we got here. Alan didn’t want to be in pain, and Myton fulfilled that last wish. A piece of my heart will always be with Myton now.”

During lockdown Kelly, Tommy and Shay have raised £4,400 for Myton by selling a signed Coventry City shirt, holding a Mother’s Day raffle, a lockdown raffle and selling knitted nurses and dolls – their total was matched by a generous family friend.

Kelly adds: “Lockdown is extremely hard whilst still in the early stages of grief but raising money for Myton has given myself and our boys a purpose, our fundraising won’t stop! No amount of money is enough to thank you for the love, care and support you gave our family on Alan’s final journey, but we do thank you all and shall be forever grateful.”

We think Kelly, Tommy and Shay are truly amazing and we can’t thank them enough for their fundraising, kind words and ongoing support!

Rugby MP Mark Pawsey heard about Tommy’s letter and spoke about Alan’s care in Parliament at Myton during Prime Minister’s Questions, highlighting the important role Myton, and all hospices, play in supporting patients at the end of their lives and their families!
