Happy memories of school ‘Rowing’ club

-

THANKYOU for the article about canal towpaths to get a makeover in Coventry.

In 1969 I was at Southfields school. Hillfields

Headmaster Mr D.H. Thomas and my teachers Mr R. Bell and Mr P Colins started a “Rowing” club which involved a dingy and canoe. Regular after school evening trips in summer.

The Draper Field was not yet a housing development. A reporter from the Coventry Evening Telegraph visited us and photographed us at the Drapers Field site near the canal basin.

A few of my classmates were featured learning safety and rowing.

It will be good to see the continued improvements and clean-up of what is a brilliant feature of our city.

I often do a “ring” route from the Basin and out to the Ricoh Arena. The clear-up of the towpath will add to the pleasure.

I don’t know Jim O’boyle or Russell Poulton but I wish them every success and offer any assistance. B.kemp, Coventry.

Great to make the best of Culture year

THE long list of improvement plans for Coventry’s big year as the City of Culture are coming along nicely.

And with recent schemes to open up land near the Cathedral and clean-up the Coventry Canal towpaths the city could look absolutely brilliant for the many visitors the Culture year is sure to attract.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to show off our proud city which won’t come round again for a long time so it’s good to see the council and others trying really hard to make the best of it.

And with news that Coventry City are planning to build a new stadium things are certainly looking up after a truly hard year for us all.

P. Martin, Coventry.
