COVENTRY City midfielder Zain Westbrooke has revealed that he was sold on joining Bristol Rovers after a chat with manager Ben Garner who persuaded him that a move to the Memorial Ground would help him to continue his development as a footballer.

The 23-year-old is understood to have been told that he could leave the Sky Blues this summer despite playing a vital role in the club’s promotion from League One as champions.

But City have still recouped a fee for his departure with

Rovers landing him for a price that will remain undisclosed. The midfielder’s exit will surprise Sky Blues fans who celebrated a little over a month ago when the club confirmed that they had triggered a one-year option to keep Westbrooke for next season. However, with five weeks until the start of Mark Robins’ Championship campaign the former Brentford man has become the first City regular to depart.

“I’m really happy to get the deal over the line,” Westbrooke told Rovers’ website as he completed his move.

“I’ve been speaking to Ben for a few

weeks now and he sold me on the project.

“The direction the club is moving in matches exactly what I’m wanting to do with my career,” he added.

“I enjoyed a really good season last year with Coventry and played a big part in their promotion and I’m looking to achieve that again here.”

City fans have bid farewell to Westbrooke with one supporter on social media saying he is “sad to see” the 23-year-old leave. Here is what Sky Blues fans have been saying on social media since his exit was confirmed:

Amar Singh – Shame looked good at the start of last season. Guess shows how competitive our midfield is now gearing up for the championship.

David Collins – Some signing for Bristol Rovers that is. All the best Zain Westbrooke, I genuinely think we’ll miss him, I rate him massively.

Jon Venters – Sad to see him go but understand he wants to be playing week in week out and he deserves that.
