Boss: Lockdown still hurting us as wait for win ends

-

COVENTRY City boss Mark Robins says lockdown has taken more out of his players than he had first expected after his side narrowly secured their first win of pre-season.

The Sky Blues have longed for a summer victory after failing to beat Rangers, Swindon Town and Wolves during the early weeks of August – but their wait for a win has now come to an end.

City impressed against Rangers and did so again on Saturday afternoon as goals from Matty Godden (two) and Callum O’hare got them off to a glorious start at Stadium:mk.

Kyle Mcfadzean put through his own net during the second half but Robins’ side was able to do enough to win 3-2.

He said: “It was okay today, we were closer to [match fitness] although we conceded two really poor goals.

“We gave them one goal and scored the second for them,” he said. “There was plenty of decent work and we scored three good goals, all good finishes.

“It could have been more in the first half too.

He continued: “We’re still a way off [full fitness]. I think the lockdown has taken a bigger toll than we thought.

“That has been a difficulty, but a lot of us are in the same boat. We are just making sure that we do not injure them.

“It is hard to gauge.

“We are still a way off but it was 90 minutes for some and much closer to 90 minutes for others.”

He added: “We have just got to deal with it the best we can. We have got plenty of lads who are desperate for minutes and we have two weeks now before the first game, back here at Stadium:mk.”

There are two more pre-season friendlies against Burton Albion and Peterborough United still to be played.
