A fresh take on social housing

NEW SHOW TEAMS YOUNG RENTERS LOOKING FOR HOMES WITH OLDER HOME OWNERS LOOKING FOR COMPANY...

-

THIS brilliantly-named series (we love a rhyme) is a fantastic idea and a really interesting social experiment. There are more than three million young adults still living at home, finding it impossible to get on the property ladder and having seen their chance of owning their own home halved in the last 20 years.

And there are 3.5 million pensioners living alone, with spare rooms, who would appreciate some company and extra income. So why not put them together, right?

Several problems solved in one go.

That’s the idea behind this cross-generational experiment, reminiscent of Old People’s Home For Six Year Olds.

Beginning with a series of speed-dating style events, the producers match up young adults looking for a cheaper way to rent and live, with older people who have the room and want the company, then arrange a week’s trial for them to live together.

Like 83-year-old Flo, who’s lived in

her three-bedroom house in Hove for 46 years and quite fancies the idea of a younger flatmate to introduce her to nightclubs.

She’s paired with 19-year-old Liam, a travel agency manager who lives at home where his mum does pretty much everything for him.

And Instagram businesswoman Nicole, used to spending hundreds of pounds a month on beauty treatments and socialising, who moves in with thrifty married couple Ted and Claudine in Hastings.

It’s fascinating, revealing and heartwarming, and challenges plenty of stereotypes on both sides.
