- By JOSH LAYTON News Reporter

THE owners of the former Brandon Stadium face a court hearing next month over an allegation that they failed to adequately secure the site against intruders.

Brandon Estates Ltd is accused of failing to comply with a community protection notice issued by Rugby Borough Council.

The notice under the AntiSocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act was intended to prevent unauthorised access to the former motorsport arena, which was once the home of the Coventry Bees speedway team.

Brandon Estates, of St Helier, Jersey, is accused of failing to ensure the site was “suitably and sufficiently” secured against entry by “unauthorised persons or groups” between April 2, 2019 and September 20, 2019.

The allegation relates to

“buildings and associated structures” on the former stadium site, which lies six miles east of Coventry in Brandon, Warwickshire.

At Birmingham Magistrates’ Court this afternoon (Wednesday, September 16), the case was adjourned until October 16. Neither Rugby Borough Coun

cil, which is bringing the prosecution, nor Brandon Estates attended the brief hearing, which was listed as a ‘nonpolice’ matter.

The case has previously been brought before Coventry Magistrates Court before being adjourned and transferred to Birmingham.

Jjuliali Llyle,l chairmanhi off ththe bench, said: “The matter regarding Brandon Estates Limited is adjourned to the 16th of October for a 10 o’clock start, with all parties to be notified.”

The arena, also known as Coventry Stadium, had hosted speedway events since 1928 before its closure in 2016. A campaign group called Save Coventry Speedway is fighting plans by Brandon Estates to build 137 new homes on the site.
