A WORKER at aerospace firm Meggitt’s Coventry factory has tested positive for Covid-19, it has been revealed.

It is understood that the worker was displaying coronavirus symptoms on Monday (September 14) at the factory in Holbrook Lane and was sent home.

It is thought that a subsequent Covid19 test proved positive, with workers at the site being made aware on Wednesday (September 16).

Meggitt’s Holbrook Lane facility remains open but a spokesman for the company said it had been subjected to a deep clean.

The company spokesman said that the worker who tested positive had not contracted the virus at the Holbrook Lane factory and that the company has taken “immediate action” to safeguard other workers at the site.

It was also stated that the company was following UK government and international Covid-19 guidelines and that the safety of employees remains its “first priority”.

An employee at the site, who did not wish to be named, said: “On Monday there was an employee sent home with symptoms, on Wednesday we found out they had tested positive.”

A spokesman for Meggitt said: “On behalf of our Coventry site, we would like to clarify that we are supporting a colleague at our Holbrook Lane facility who has tested positive for Covid19.

“While the virus was contracted outside of our facility, we have taken immediate action to safeguard our remaining plant population, including a deep clean operation.

“The safety of our colleagues remains our first priority and we are actively ensuring their welfare as we continue to follow international and UK government guidelines.”

Meggitt is a global aerospace company which has its UK base is on the Ansty Business Park on the edge of Coventry. It opened last year after the company decided to relocate its global headquarters from Bournemouth Airport. The move to the Midlands saw Meggitt embark on a project to centralise its operations at Ansty Park as part of a £130million investment.

In April the company, which makes parts used in aeroplanes, announced it was axing around 15 per cent of its 12,000-strong worldwide workforce in response to a slump in civil aerospace demand.

At that point the company employed around 2,500 people in the UK and around 6,500 in the US, with other global operations in countries such as China, German, France and Brazil.
