Schools to help remember

- By CLAIRE HARRISON News Reporter

BEDWORTH’S pride at being the ‘town that never forgets’ will continue on Armistice Day despite Covid-19 restrictions.

Parade organisers were determined to still honour the fallen despite being unable, for the first time ever, to hold an annual parade.

Now there is a way that people can remember - by asking school children to get involved.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is asking youngsters to help create a remembrance display which will be showcased the windows of the Civic Hall on November 11.

The display, using the theme of Armistice and Remembrance can take any form which is conducive with a window display such as artwork, poetry and crafts.

It has a move that been backed by the armistice group.

Ken Whitehead, the group’s chairman said: “It is etched in stone on our wall, ‘Bedworth, the town that never forgets’.

“Although we will not be marching this year, we will be remembering as we have done for almost a century, the brave people who have given the ultimate sacrifice enabling us to live in peace.

“Please give two minutes of your time to stop, reflect and remember them all.”

‘This may not be what we are used to in Bedworth, but we will remember’.

“We hope to get all Bedworth Schools involved and keep one of the town’s proud traditions alive, albeit in a very different way this year.”

As previously reported, it was back in August that upset parade organisers revealed the risk of coronavirus and putting people’s lives at risk was too great for them to host the event on November 11 this year.

The town’s has an incredibly proud history as being the only one outside of London to have observed two minutes silence on the eleventh hour on the eleventh day on the eleventh month since 192 There were plans for this year’s parade to be the ‘biggest and best yet’ but now efforts are being put into next year’s event.

Any school wanting to take part can contact Joy at the Civic Hall on 024 7637 6707, or email joy. burgess@nuneatonandbedworth.gov.uk

Work has to be submitted before Monday, November 2.
