Latest Covid death rates in the city

CORONAVIRUS cases in Coventry and Warwickshire may be soaring - but the number of deaths is so far not increasing.

NHS figures show that there have been no coronavirus-related deaths in hospitals in the region since September 13.

Two people have died with Covid-19 in the three hospital trusts during September.

There are a number of theories as to why the death rate is not appearing to increase as cases rise.

Across the Midlands region as a whole, deaths are mounting up, with 59 deaths during the whole of September to date.

Last Wednesday, September 23, was the worst day, with 10 deaths recorded.

For most days in September across the whole Midlands region, between one and six deaths were recorded. In contrast, just 25 Covid deaths were recorded in the Midlands in August.

With some areas of the Midlands - including Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull, which have been put into local lockdown - harder hit than others, the comparatively low current death rate in Coventry and Warwickshire may just be down to fewer cases.

Another theory is that a different age profile of Covid sufferers in the second wave has meant fewer deaths.

Compared to the start of the pandemic, more young people are catching the virus - with a third of all cases in one week this month among people in their 20s.

Most people who have died with coronavirus have been in their 60s or above.

Another factor could be greater testing capabilities.

Anyone with symptoms is eligible to get a test now (subject to current delays) - but in April only certain people were told to get tested.

This means the testing system could be picking up and recording a greater number of people with mild symptoms.

The total death count in hospitals in Coventry and Warwickshire stands at 537 people.

That includes 178 deaths at the George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton, 119 deaths at the South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust and 240 deaths at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire.

The last death occurred at the George Eliot on September 13 and before that on September 6 at UHCW.

That figure is accurate up to Monday, September 28 although the figures may change as more information comes to light. The total does not include deaths in the community.
