Two pieces of land identified for new car parking plans

NUNEATON hospital bosses have identified two parcels of land for new multi-storey car parks to ease the pressure on parking spaces for patients and visitors.

But while the plans are in place, the funding to pay for the much-needed additions at the George Eliot Hospital is not.

A business case is currently being prepared in the event of outside funding being made available.

This includes the preferred option of where the new car parks would be located - where the current main car park is as well as some neighbouring land that backs onto the A444.

Multi-storey car parking formed a key part of the Health & Wellbeing Campus ( HWBC) proposal for the sprawling hospital site.

The plans in their original form, including education on site, are unlikely to come to fruition after being fanfared in June 2017.

But the hospital wants to forge ahead with some elements of it.

Multi-storey car park provision is one of two schemes the Eliot wants to achieve according to the estates quarterly report.

Multi-storey Car Park - The Trust has two parcels of land which would become available for development if a Multi-storey Car Park was developed on site.

The two sites have been identified in the latest surplus land return. An outline business case is currently being developed which will be available if central funding becomes available.

Extra care Development - working in partnership with Warwickshire County Council to develop a 70 bedded extra care development on the Bullring elevation of the site. This scheme was delayed due to Covid-19 however it is proposed that a bidder’s day to attract a developer for the scheme be undertaken as soon as possible to progress this development.

It is no secret that the Eliot needs more car parking spaces, it is an issue that has been raised for many years.

Back in February, David Carr, chair of the Patient Forum, aired concerns about the impact of extra houses being built in the borough would have on demand on the hospital and, therefore, parking.

Members of the Eliot’s board are due to discuss the proposals.
