‘I love playing for this football club. I’d love to spend longer here and hopefully have more success’

KELLY WANTS TO EXTEND STAY AT CITY WHEN HIS DEAL ENDS

COVENTRY City captain Liam Kelly is out of contract in the summer.

His future remains up in the air, having not yet been offered a new deal and there not being a clause option for the club to automatically trigger another year.

But the influential Sky Blues skipper insists he’d love to continue his “fantastic journey” with the club, which has seen him help Mark Robins’ men rise from League Two to the Championship in the last four years.

Asked about his contract situation, Kelly told the Telegraph: “There’s no option there so I will be out of contract at the end of the season. But as far as I am concerned, all I can do is concentrate on the next game and what will be will be come the end of the season.”

Asked if he’s spoken to the manager about his future, he said: “No. There’s no offer yet and as I said, I am just getting my head down and that’s all I can do, try to win our next game.”

Given the fact that he’s City’s captain and a natural leader who has been instrumental in helping the team get some important results back in the second tier, however, and fact that Robins is a great admirer of his ability and role in the side, the likelihood is that the 31-year-old will be offered fresh terms rather than allowed to leave at the end of the season.

“I love Coventry City and love playing for this football club,” he said, “and I’d love to spend longer here and hopefully have more successful times.

“And hopefully that will be the case.

“It’s been a fantastic journey so far and I don’t want it to be the end of it.

All I can do is concentrate on the next game and what will be will be come the end of the season.

“Obviously we don’t want a relegation this season. We want to keep moving forward and being successful and I will try my best to play as much of a part as I can and give all my energy between now and the end of the season to try to help achieve that.

“But it’s been a fantastic journey so far and hopefully it’s not the end of it.”
